"I started doing portraiture in response to a need for expressive faces on my larger sculptures. It wasn't long before I found I liked doing portraits for their own sake. There is a real challenge in trying to capture a likeness and some aspects of the model's personality. There is beauty and character abounding in every person's face. Getting to know each person who sits for me is a large part of exploring this. Not so much the details of their story as the way the expressions play across their face as they talk. The ultimate aspiration of portraiture is to reflect a little of the subject's soul during the creation of the physical likeness."
