Choosing tools to achieve various surfaces will be addressed.  Hollowing out and finishing the sculpture will be discussed during class. Work is  1/3 - 1/2 life size from a model and can be hollowed out for firing. Two bags of clay will be provided.

May 19 - 23, 2003 Workshop
Child Portrait in Clay or Plasticine
Sculpting a child can be challenging! They like to move, talk and are sometimes shy. In this workshop techniques will be addressed for coping with issues inherent in sculpting portraits of children, in addition to the usual aspects of portraiture in sculpture. We will explore photography for the purposes of portraiture and how to optimize the information available in the photographs. One set of photographs will be taken at the beginning of the class and each student will receive copies to work from. We will be working life-size from a live model in clay or plasticine on an armature in conjunction with photographs as this enables the sculptor to freeze the action in expressions as well as search for light and shadows that can be seen as forms on the actual face of the child. Along with measurements, this technique of working from life & photos at the same time helps to compensate for most children's limitations as models. We will also be exploring the anatomy of the head & capturing likeness, personality & mood as well as issues of composition.

June 2 - 6, 2003 Workshop
Portrait in Clay

Capturing likeness and expression in portraiture is a challenge. Facial expressions are fleeting and the sculpting process is relatively slow.  In this workshop the focus will be on capturing likeness, personality & mood as well as the anatomy of the head. We will explore the use of photography for the purposes of portraiture and how to optimize the information available in the photographs.  Along with measurements, this technique of working from life & photos at the same time helps to transcend the limitations inherent in working from the model alone. It enables the sculptor to freeze the action of the face for analysis of highlights and shadows, which can then be looked for as forms on the face of the actual model.  This will enhance the student's ability to capture likeness, proportion and facial expression. It also cuts down on time required for the model to sit.
We will be exploring the anatomy of the head, neck, and upper torso, as well as gesture and other elements of composition concerning portraiture in sculpture.  The use of tools to achieve various types of surfaces will be addressed, and all facets of sculpting a portrait will be demonstrated.  The class aims also to heighten the participants awareness of three dimensional perception issues, such as the optimal points of view to see gesture, proportion, form and edges, suggesting strategies to increase understanding of what is seen.  Work will be life-size in clay on a wire and steel pipe armature, and each student will receive a set of photographs of the model.

"I started doing portraiture in response to a need for expressive faces on my larger sculptures. It wasn't long before I found I liked doing portraits for their own sake. There is a real challenge in trying to capture a likeness and some aspects of the model's personality. There is beauty and character abounding in every person's face. Getting to know each person who sits for me is a large part of exploring this. Not so much the details of their story as the way the expressions play across their face as they talk. The ultimate aspiration of portraiture is to reflect a little of the subject's soul during the creation of the physical likeness."

September 8 - 12, 2003 Workshop
Figure In Clay

We will be sculpting a reclining or seated figure in terra cotta.   It will be suitable for firing or moldmaking.  We will choose an expressive pose and then attempt to render an accurate and beautiful sculpture of the pose.
The gesture is the core of any figurative work and so the essential movement, rhythm and flow of the pose will be stressed.  To this end we will sculpt several very quick figures as a preliminary exercise.  Anatomy, proportion and approaches to measuring are integral to figure sculpting and will be addressed. We will also attempt to heighten the participant's awareness of three-dimensional perception issues such as the optimal point of view to see gesture, proportion, form or edge.  We will discuss what lighting is best to see form, texture or detail.
Use of tools to achieve various types of surfaces will be addressed as well as the engineering aspects of building small figures in clay.  Sculpting the figure, hollowing out & finishing techniques will all be demonstrated.  The many ways of visualizing three dimensional form, and the choice of tools to solve particular problems will also be addressed.  Tools will be available for use.
